Cultural Heritage of Suncheon City, Korea

In collaboration with Suncheon-si, Jeollanam-do, Gwangju National Museum presented the special exhibition, Cultural Heritage of Suncheon City, Korea, as part of the annual special exhibition series and also to commemorate the hosting of the Suncheon Bay Garden Expo 2013. On display were the natural surroundings of Suncheon, which is referred to as Xiajiangnan(referring to the beautiful lands immediately south of the Yangtze River); prehistoric and ancient cultures revealed from more than 70 excavations; the Buddhist culture centering on Mt. Jogye in the Goryeo and Joseon periods; Confucianism and its practice in the Joseon Dynasty; and literary works on the subject of Suncheon. Modern history was also featured, including the lives of missionaries in the twentieth century and the activities of Suncheon people who protected the nation and its spirit during the Japanese colonial era.

Gwangju National Museum hosted this special exhibition to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the designation of Sinchangdong ruins as Historic Site No. 375. The ruins were the very first complex site that revealed the production, lives and burial customs of the Iron Age on the Korean Peninsula. The site became widely known through the excavations of the low wetlands conducted by the Museum in 1992, and an exhibition that revived the lives of the people of 2,000 years ago based on the findings from the successive excavations. As many as 806 objects were displayed, including weapons and agricultural tools.

Masterpieces of the Zhejiang Provincial Museum

In commemoration of the 20 years of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Korea and the People's Republic of China, and also the 5th anniversary of sisterhood ties with the Zhejiang Provincial Museum, Gwangju National Museum presented a special exhibition titled Masterpieces of the Zhejiang Provincial Museum. It was the first-ever such exhibition to be held on the theme of 7,000-year history of Zhejiang Province, which is selected as the most salubrious region in China. It had six themes and on display were the oldest rice farming ruins of Hemudu; cultural heritages of the Wu and Yue Dynasties during the Warring States Period; the zenith of metalware, the Buddhist metal works of the Wu period; the origin of Chinese celadon, Yue ware in Zhejiang Province; paintings from the Ming and Qing Dynasties to name a few.

Cultural Heritage of Gangjin City, Jeollanam-do

As part of the annual special exhibition series, Gwangju National Museum held its third exhibition, the Cultural Heritage of Gangjin City, Jeollanam-do. It illustrated the ceramic history of Gangjin, a host region of official kilns for celadon in the Goryeo Dynasty, from the prehistoric to the contemporary times, and also dedicated sections for Buddhism, Confucianism and contemporary literature.

The Return of the Oegyujanggak Uigwe from France

After 145 years, the quintessence of the Joseon Dynasty's documents, Oegyujanggak Uigwe (Royal Protocols of the Joseon Dynasty's had finally returned home. The special exhibition The Return of the Oegyujanggak Uigwe from France was conceived to enhance the understanding of the distinguished royal court's culture and high documentation will of the Joseon Dynasty. What was more significant about the exhibited uigwe is that it was for the king's inspection and it was the first-ever to be exhibited outside the capital. On display were 109 objects, including 51 Oegyujanggak Uigwe such as Hyojonggukjangdogam Uigwe (Book of King Hyojong's State Funeral), Sadosejagaryedogam Uigwe (Book of Crown Prince Sado's Royal Wedding), seal of King Hyeonjong and many more royal artifacts from the Joseon Dynasty.

Tamjin Choe's Faminly Donation

The major displays of this exhibition were the donated objects from Choe Sang-gyu and other Choe family members from the Jinsagong branch of the Tamjin Choe clan. The exhibition featured more than 150 objects, including the tombstone of Choe Sa-jeon, the loyal retainer of the Goryeo Dynasty and the progenitor of the Choe family in the Tamjin clan; documents revealing the prominent members of the Tamjin Choes in the Goryeo and Joseon periods; hogudanja(submitted document on family members); and objects that reflect the social atmosphere during the Japanese colonial period.

The Gwangju National Museum has been annually organizing a series of exhibitions to highlight the local cultural heritages of Jeollanam-do. Cultural Heritage of Gwangyang City, Jeollanam-do, is a comprehensive exhibition presenting the history and culture of Gwangyang by featuring more than 200 pieces of important cultural assets from prehistoric to contemporary periods. The exhibits were on loan from more than 40 institutions, including National Treasure No. 103, Twin-Lion Stone Lantern in Jungheungsanseong in Gwangyang.

Changam Yi Sam-man - Like Water, Like Wind

The exhibition was organized to celebrate the 240th year of Changam Yi Sam-man's birth. It was an extensive exhibition showcasing highlights of his works throughout his career. The exhibition also featured his career and ideology rooted in his calligraphy works that are like water and like wind, and his life as a scholar undisturbed from the current trends and as a teacher who fostered his young followers through his renowned textbook, Hwadongseobeop.

Under the theme of "New Look, Renovation" the special exhibition was organized to commemorate the reopening of the Gwangju National Museum, Korea. The exhibition examined the meanings and symbolism of birds in Korean culture and how birds, which we have long admired, were represented in the cultural properties of Korea to convey our wishes and desires. The exhibition also explored the lives of people dwelling with birds in harmony, as depicted in our history and culture.
