The Gwangju National Museum plays a pivotal role in domestic and overseas research on Korean ceramics by collecting and proving the latest information on the related excavations, exhibitions and academic achievements. Also, ceramics archive materials are collected and provided in diverse formats such as exhibitions, academic conferences and reports on the results of research and excavation surveys on kiln sites in Southeast Asia to the related institutions (scholars) in Korea abroad. The Gwangju National Museum is located in the Honam region of the Korean peninsula, which is considered home to Korean ceramics as it contains countless kiln sites known to have produced Goryeo celadons and Joseon buncheong wares and white porcelains. As the center of ceramic production, the Honam region offers deep insight into the origins and advancement of Korean ceramics. As Korea’s first museum to specialize in ceramics, the Gwangju National Museum presents exhibits that provide a comprehensive perspective of the pottery exchanges in Asia, thereby identifying the similarities and differences among Asian cultures and shedding light on the value of Asian pottery amidst the world history.
