Bird-Shaped Bronze Tool
Bronze from Sudong, Yeonggwang. Length 5.5cm |
|
It was excavated with copied mirror, glass beads, daggers and pots
in Togwang-myo Grave of Sudong in Yeonggwang. This is shield-shaped
bronze board with a pattern of scrolls, birds flying in the sky and
facing each other. These bronze tools were also discovered in remains
of Dongoe-dong in Goseong.
A bird was a symbol of freedom and was considered as an existence
guiding spirits to the heaven. Also it was considered as a symbol
of wealth in the agricultural age. Consequently, bird-shaped artifacts
were made and used in ceremony.
The chapter of ¡®Jinhan Beonjin-jo¡¯ of ¡®Wiseodongijeon¡¯ of ¡®Samgukji(Romance
of Three Kingdoms)¡¯ says that ¡®hoping dead people may freely fly,
they use big feathers of birds in funeral¡¯.
In graves and remains of Mahan bird-shaped artifacts and bowls were
found and it is estimated to be related to ceremonies. This bronze
object is also considered to be used in a ceremony relating to birds. |
