Bird-Shaped Bronze Tool
Bronze from Sudong, Yeonggwang. Length 5.5cm
It was excavated with copied mirror, glass beads, daggers and pots in Togwang-myo Grave of Sudong in Yeonggwang. This is shield-shaped bronze board with a pattern of scrolls, birds flying in the sky and facing each other. These bronze tools were also discovered in remains of Dongoe-dong in Goseong.
A bird was a symbol of freedom and was considered as an existence guiding spirits to the heaven. Also it was considered as a symbol of wealth in the agricultural age. Consequently, bird-shaped artifacts were made and used in ceremony.
The chapter of ¡®Jinhan Beonjin-jo¡¯ of ¡®Wiseodongijeon¡¯ of ¡®Samgukji(Romance of Three Kingdoms)¡¯ says that ¡®hoping dead people may freely fly, they use big feathers of birds in funeral¡¯.
In graves and remains of Mahan bird-shaped artifacts and bowls were found and it is estimated to be related to ceremonies. This bronze object is also considered to be used in a ceremony relating to birds.
